Time Magazine’s Alex Altman writes that Barack Obama has ‘missed an opportunity’ in failing to exploit the tragic ‘Batman’ massacre to push for gun control, insinuating that Obama should have spent less time mourning and more time hijacking the shooting for political purposes.

In an article entitled ‘President Obama Mourns Aurora — and Misses an Opportunity’, Altman laments the fact that Obama concerned himself only with offering, “gentle clichés and pat expressions of sympathy,” instead of honing in on the fact that killer James Holmes was able to purchase his arsenal of firearms and ammunition legally on the Internet.

Altman even questions why Mitt Romney didn’t also hijack the tragedy for political points scoring, noting that the former Governor of Massachusetts “had signed a ban on the kind of semiautomatic weapon the Aurora gunman used to murder 12 people. Neither leader mentioned gun laws at all.”

Altman is upset that instead of allowing families to grieve, the nation isn’t “especially interested in having a debate at all” about the establishment’s talking point of hijacking massacres to disarm the general public.

“We expect our leaders to grieve after a tragedy like Aurora. We no longer expect them to change anything,” bemoans Altman, throwing his toys out of the pram at the fact that the Obama administration didn’t hype the tragedy enough to grease the skids for a legislative assault on the second amendment.

Notable by its absence is the fact that innumerable potentially deadly and violent crimes are prevented every year by law-abiding citizens using firearms, most recently in the case of two gunmen who entered an Internet Cafe in Florida but were chased away by a senior citizen with a concealed carry weapon.

Despite the fact that numerous public figures, the likes of Mayor Bloomberg, Rupert Murdoch and Piers Morgan, wasted no time in feeding upon the massacre to push for gun control, the consensus seems to be that regulating firearms does not stop massacres and indeed only serves to disarm their victims.

For example, Norway has some of the strictest gun control laws in the developed world but that didn’t stop Anders Breivik from slaughtering 77 people. Had just one of the young victims on Utoya Island had the right to a concealed carry permit, that number could have been far lower.

Despite the lack of momentum within Congress or between the two presidential candidates to take a fresh bite out of the second amendment, such a move could come on a global stage with the Obama administration set to agree to a UN arms treaty that experts have warned could be used as an end run around gun rights in America.

In the meantime, the establishment media will continue to blame the ‘Batman’ massacre, despite the fact that it had zero political motivation behind it whatsoever, on the Tea Party, talk radio, and any vocal critic of the Obama administration, as the NRA itself warns that Obama’s potential ‘lame duck’ second term will be used to literally “outlaw guns” for good.
